Architects are sci-fi. Defined by the unknown and forever hopeful for the future, the similarities between the field of design and the imaginative worlds of science fiction stories, offer creative ways to understand the built environment and integrate adaptive technologies. As the world struggles to find innovative avenues to speak about and design for uncertainties in the built and natural environment, perhaps science fiction can lead the way.

Beyond just examining the setting in a novel, science fiction worlds tell us about our humanity, fears, hopes and the lasting impact of buildings. Developing a lens to look at design as a storytelling device and using it as a method to impact change, brings imagination to the forefront of more beautiful, thought-provoking and resilient futures.
